Volunteers Needed

Our friends at Intercambio need volunteers to help students practice English. “The ‘Conversation Team’ of community volunteers visits group classes to practice English with Intercambio students. This speed-dating-like experience pairs native speakers with English students for 10-minute conversations before switching to a new partner. Students have an opportunity to practice English in a safe environment with native speakers, while volunteers get to connect with Intercambio students.”

Partying for a Cause

la fiesta

Help Longmont Loves get people out to Intercambio’s La Fiesta.

From Intercambio:
Our 16th annual La Fiesta World Party, features live music, food trucks, community and a World Market. The goal of this event is to bring diverse cultures together at a fun event as well to raise $40,000 to help Intercambio to continue to improve lives through English education and unite communities across cultures.

La Fiesta 2017 live bands range from salsa to cumbia, merengue and dancing with soul music. Food trucks feature Colombian arepas, Middle Eastern falafels, and wood fired pizza to delight the senses. This year, shop artisan items in our World Market including art, home goods, jewelry, fashion and accessories, skin care and paper goods.

Longmont Loves Action

A big hearty thank you to all of you who have supported the Longmont Loves Fund! With your support, we have distributed over 150 yard signs and dozens of bumper stickers, spreading the love throughout Longmont.

And spreading the love – getting these signs and stickers out in the community, showing that we are accepting of people from various backgrounds and groups – is a big part of the Longmont Loves mission.

But, beyond this mission, we are hoping to do more to foster a sense of openness and acceptance in our community. We would love your input and involvement as we explore new paths to creating a greater sense of community in Longmont. Here are a few projects we’re working on.

  1. We have offered to help sell tickets to La Fiesta, a fundraising event for Intercambio. Intercambio is an organization that provides free classes to immigrants to help them learn English and unites communities across cultures. La Fiesta is September 9th, 7:30pm – 12:30am at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. “La Fiesta celebrates Boulder County’s multicultural community with live bands to inspire the dance floor with rhythms ranging from salsa and merengue to West African drumming and dancing with Soul Music. Food trucks featuring Colombian arepas, Middle Eastern falafels, and wood fired pizza will also delight the senses. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to shop artisan items in the World Market including  art, home goods, jewelry, fashion and accessories, skin care and paper goods.” If you are interested in helping sell tickets to this event, please contact Julie.
  2. Intercambio is also searching for English speakers to interact with their students, helping them to work on their English in a comfortable setting. The next opportunity to do this is August 17. Please let us know if you’re interested in volunteering to help with this or future events. We may also explore the idea of working with Intercambio to see if we can set up meetings with their students in which volunteers also get to practice other people’s native languages. If you are interested in getting involved with this activity, please contact Catherine Powers.
  3. We would like to work with the city to set up some sister block parties, in which a block in one part of town has a block party that includes people from a block in another part of town, and vice versa. This could be a great way for people from different parts of town to interact. If you are interested in getting involved with this or organizing a block party, please contact us.
  4. We would like to continue to get the word out at different fairs and festivals around Longmont. If you know of any events where we should have a table or any groups we should reach out to, or if you might be able to volunteer some time tabling at an event, please contact contact us.

We would love your help with any of these activities. And if you have further suggestions, please let us know. Thank you for your support and involvement!
